Dairy Farmer's Thankful Thursday

Resting in the shade  on a hot July afternoon is the routine for
these  cows that  will be calving within the next two weeks.
It's hard to find a cool spot in the month of July,
but  if you follow the cows during the day, you will find yourself
moving to where ever the shade is found in the pasture.

It's our job to make sure they have access to  fresh water
and shade and monitor them closely for signs of calving.
We also provide a special formulated feed that meets their
nutritional needs while they are resting from milk
 production and  preparing  for calving.

When I watch the cows resting in the shade by the yard,
I'm thankful for the memory of planting these pine tree
twigs nearly thirty years ago with Cody and Casey playing
in the yard, for the beauty of each tree and the shade
that is so appreciated by our beautiful Holstein cows
down on the dairy farm.

Dairymom's Thankful Thursday

I'm thankful for the spring rain we enjoyed this week,

for the new babies we have welcomed to the farm,

for the blooming trees and flowers that survived
our freezing temperatures just as the buds set on,

for watching  Hattie's  excitement in seeing the cows
numerous times a day,

and

for the opportunity to share our love of the dairy  farm
with our fifth generation.

I can't think of a better way to welcome spring!

Dairymom's Thankful Thursday

Last week while I was working at the computer on farm records, the lights flickered and a wind gust brought two stories of a six story sycamore tree crashing down in front of the house. From the sound of the crash and the vibration I felt in the house, I ran upstairs to see if I might see the sky!

Although I was sad to see this old, beautiful  tree broken, I am very thankful that no damage occurred to the house and that my family, our employees, and our cattle were safe during this unexpected wind storm.

Dairymom's Thankful Thursday

Just a few warm spring days last week encouraged and coaxed the trees to begin unfolding from their long winter rest.   My favorite tree in our front yard is this flowering crabapple which was a gift from Ryan's mother many years ago. It brings great joy with it's beauty and the memory of a very special person in our family who loved trees and spring.

I'm thankful for the blessings of family and
spring down on the dairy farm!
