Dairymom's Thankful Thursday

It was a dreary, gray, drizzly start to our calf feeding chore time this morning.
As I looked to the dry pasture to see if we had any new calves born in the night,
I spotted 6 young deer running together at the north end of the pasture
trying to figure out how to get over the electric fence.

The deer moved so quickly and gracefully.
I wished I had been able to capture a better picture of their beauty and grace but
my phone /camera  was buried in my coveralls to protect it from the drizzle.

You can see a faint outline of the deer inside the heart.
It was obvious that fences are no obstacle to the deer.

I'm thankful for the moments of surprise that warm the heart
and send a special message of love that God provides
down on the dairy farm when least expected.

                                                     Happy Valentine's Day!

Dairymom's Thankful Thursday

I'm thankful for the things we enjoy everyday down on the dairy farm such as

faithful farm dogs,

wild Egyptian geese that love our farm habitat,

and
curious cows that are always looking for
green grass on the other side of the fence.

Dairymom's Thankful Thursday

The leader of the Egyptian Geese started her training class early this morning as we began feeding calves.
It was obvious by the response to the leader's call, they had been through this drill before as they marched from the feed bunk to the edge of the grass.

These are just one of the many birds that we see and enjoy  everyday on the dairy farm.
I'm thankful that our farm land provides a natural habitat for many of God's creatures.

Benefits of Dairy Farm Living

One of the benefits of living on the dairy  farm is to enjoy the wildlife that are living on the land. We started chopping a field of sorghum this week and while I was waiting for the chopper to make it's way up the field, I spotted this interesting bird hopping from bush to bush in the fence row. What caught my eye were the stripes on his head. I don't claim to be a bird expert but from the pictures in my Field Guide to the Birds, I believe it is a White-Crowned Sparrow.

According to information provided by the Arkansas Foundation for Agriculture:
  • 75% of the nation's wildlife food and habitat is provided by farm and ranches.
  • Farmers have enrolled 31.4 million acres of their land in the Conservation Reserve Program to protect the environment and provide habitat for wildlife.
  • Through various conservation incentive progrems, farmers have pledged to install 20 million acres of conservaton buffers.
  • The net loss of wetlands has decreased from a level of 24,000 acres lost each year(1982-92) to 24,000 acres each year (from 1992-97) through designed programs, such as the Wetlands Reserve Program (an 11% reduction).
We are blessed by the world around us. The birds in the field are reminders daily of God's perfect plan and our responsibility to care for the land and our animals as we work to provide high-quality milk for you and your family.

                                                                     Happy Sunday!

Dairymom's Thankful Thursday

Farms and ranches provide natural habitat for many birds and animals.

Last June we were watching these Egyptian geese with their babies and this week I found this young  pair swimming in the same pond.

During a busy spring day on the farm,
                                                            I'm thankful for the moments
I can enjoy watching God's perfect creation.

Dairymom's Thankful Thursday

Last June these unique Egyptian Geese were born on our farm.

Just a few days ago, I found the young geese perched on one of the cattle shades in the pasture with the dairy cows. Caring for the land, air and water is a responsibility dairy farmers take seriously because we live and work on our farm and strive to preserve the land for the next generation.   I'm thankful that our dairy farm provides a natural habitat for a variety of birds and wildlife for all of us to enjoy.
