Weather and Farmers

If you have ever been involved in farming, related to a farmer

or know a farmer, you know that weather is a big topic of

discussion especially  when planning how to harvest a crop.

We listen to the weather reports morning, noon and night

and I  have learned (the hard way) that you do not talk to

the farmer during the weather report.

We've been waiting  for "the just right weather" to begin

these last days of fall harvest.

After the three inch rain last week, the ground has

finally dried enough to begin  the last cutting of the hay crop.

This part of the acreage is being dry baled so an extra
day was required to allow it to dry before being baled.

The other part of this fall hay  harvest was baled and wrapped.
These bales will ferment and be used as silage in the
feed ration for the dairy cows.

Wrapping hay is often a great way to save a hay crop
from unpredictable weather. You might say it's one of the
tools in the farmer's weather tool box!

It's time now to catch the next weather forecast!

Dairymom's Thankful Thursday

It's milo chopping time down on the dairy farm.
I made it to the field just in time to see  today's last load of chopped milo head to the silo.
As you can see, it has grown well above my head this year.
It is a drought resistant grain  crop so with adequate rain it grows like crazy!

I'm thankful for this year's milo crop that will be used
to feed our dairy cattle this winter
and

for the perfect fall weather for harvesting our crops.

Dairymom's Thankful Thursday

Before Casey was in sight of the pasture with the feed wagon, these pregnant  cows
were ready and waiting for their morning treat. They weren't a bit
bothered by the chilly, rainy weather that's been
hanging around for the last few days.

I'm thankful for the routine of our everyday life on the dairy farm.
No day is the same because of the things we don't control
and  yet it's our routine to care for our cattle
and the land we call home everyday of the year.

Dairymom's Thankful Thursday

No matter where you spend Thanksgiving,
I hope eating will be a part of it!

We'll be working all day to make sure our dairy  calves and cows
have plenty to eat just as we do everyday of the year.

I'm thankful for the season of Thanksgiving
and wish you and your family a very
 Happy Thanksgiving!

Dairymom's Thankful Thursday

Feeding our dairy cows a nutritious diet is an everyday activity.
I'm thankful for the the grain farmers that grow the corn we purchase for our cows to enjoy everyday of the year,

for equipment that makes it possible to load feed  easily,

and

for the satisfaction of knowing the cows are enjoying the fruits of the farmers' labor.
