Lovin' on Agriculture

What's not to love about agriculture? Agriculture is  vitally important in our everyday lives.

 National Ag Day gives us a special opportunity to celebrate and give a little extra love for

 what we often take for granted.

Agriculture is celebrated on National Ag Day to appreciate :

• the value it brings to our everyday lives 
• how it improves and  maintains a strong economy
• the role it plays in providing abundant and affordable products
• how food and fiber products are produced

This year's national  theme is "Agriculture: Stewards of a Healthy Planet".
 It's obvious that with limited resources and more people (9 billion) to feed by 2050,

 producing more food and agricultural products will require all of us working together
 to conserve and preserve all along the production and farm to market  path.
 Dairy farm families across the United States are working every day to produce high

 quality milk using proven science and technologies.

Here's a few ag facts to celebrate...

• One U.S. farm feeds 168 people.
• 97% of U.S. farms are family owned
• Total U.S. crop yield (tons per acre) has increased more than 360% since 1950.
• Dairy farms produce a gallon of milk using 95 percent less land, and 65 percent 
• less water while producing 76 percent less manure compared with 1944.

Dairy Celebrates National Ag Day

National Ag Day is an opportunity for all Americans to celebrate and bring awareness about  the contribution of agriculture in our everyday lives.

                 Think about it, agriculture provides almost everything we eat,use and wear on a daily basis. American agriculture is doing more and doing it better.

Dairy farmers today,thanks to science, proven research and technology,

                      produce a gallon of milk using 95 percent less land and 65 percent less water
                                    while producing 76 percent less manure compared with 1944.

Dairymom's Thankful Thursday

     National Ag Day celebrates the fact that American agriculture is doing more and doing it better.

 I love this picture of my mother-in-law, Bonnah Lyn.  It's a reminder to me of how hard she worked, the sacrifices she made for her family and family farm, and how technology has changed the efficiency of food production.
    I'm thankful for  our agricultural heritage and for the third generation farmer she raised just for me!

Happy National Agriculture Day!  It's a great day to celebrate and bring recognition to   America's farmers for  producing the safest,most affordable and available food supply. It's a fact that one farmer supplies food for more than 144 people in the United States and abroad compared with just 25.8 people in 1960 and on less land every year.  I'm thankful for all of the farm families that are working everyday to make sure we have a safe and secure food supply.

Dairy farm families across America are working every day to provide safe,high quality milk and dairy products. National Agriculture Day is a great opportunity to celebrate that fact and point out that while producing a great product, we are also caring for our land and animals.

You might find these dairy facts of interest:

• According to USDA, 98 percent of all U.S. dairy farms are family owned and operated


• More milk is produced today with only 9 million cows than with 26 million cows in 1944


• Dairy is the No. 1 agricultural business in California,Idaho,Maine,Michigan,New Mexico,New York,Pennsylvania,Vermont and Wisconsin

While American farmers are providing the safest,most affordable and available food, we are also providing jobs and economic support for our local communities. In a recent article about American agriculture, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack stated,"Every one billion dollars in agriculture exports supports 8,000 American jobs, which means agricultural exports supported nearly one million jobs in 2010."

Food security is important to all American families. With only two percent of our population providing food,fiber and fuel for all Americans, National Agriculture Day is a great opportunity to not only celebrate agriculture but share information about how we continue to provide for all consumers.
